    Articles on Foreign Affairs

In this article, Jan Mortier muses about the possibility of a nuclear war between Europe and Russia. He proposes a scenario of escalation of the Ukraine War that goes nuclear in Russia and Europe. He estimates death tolls, starting at 100 million rising to 300 million and predicts civil contingencies measures and Continuity of Government duration requirements. He postulates which European and Russian cities are likely to be targeted in a nuclear exchange and ponders two geopolitical outcomes based on a Republican or Democrat run American administration. Jan concludes that the rest of the world will survive and carry on as Europe and Russia share a regional fate that will end in a land war. He urges world leaders not to play the nuclear war game. —Article published, Rome, 28 October 2026.

In this article Jan Mortier describes world history as a series of wars, in which countless people have lost their lives in the competition for resources. He writes that there is no glory in the needless loss of human life in war and goes on to explain, from his macro-analyses at the Club of Rome, how the world economic machine and the long economic cycles are causative of war and collapse. Jan argues that the global economic system takes no account of the needs, hopes and aspirations of billions of human beings and calls for a new world economy where humans are placed at the centre of the economic system. Jan Mortier calls for humans to develop a higher consciousness and to come to the realisation that peaceful coexistence between the human systems is the preferred option to annihilation. The article ends with a call for a multi-ethnic world civilization, representing the world’s multitudes of cultures and peoples, who all should have the right of representation in  a new world organisation based on the fundamental principles of the uniqueness of human life, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect between all peoples that is maintained by meaningful, broad-based and sustained dialogue. —Article published, Rome, 27 October 2026.

Based on his work as rapporteur for conferences of former Heads of State who were leaders on both sides of the Cold War, Jan Mortier comments on the current global political crisis as the lead up to a potential third world war. Jan reminds leaders that the Rand Corporation predicted that more than two million people will die in Europe if just one thermo-nuclear weapon is used. Jan examines various pilot models for international peace to avert world war, including the European project. He then calls for dialogue between leaders to de-escalate the  global situation and for Presidents Trump, Putin and Xi JingPing to establish a G3 for global peace and security. —Article Published by Other News, Rome, 11 August 2025.

In this article, Jan Mortier examines the lack of meaningful global governance today and reminds us of James Lovelock's warning of a cyborg takeover of humanity. Jan criticizes the overt mechanisms of global governance such as Davos for dragging humanity into an AI dystopia. He goes on to remind us that once there was an antidote to Davos, in Northern Italy, which was founded by President Mikhail S. Gorbachev and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the World Political Forum, a collection of former Heads of State who discussed the governance of globalization and a new world order, who were Jan's clients. This article is as much an examination of the contemporary global political crises and the need for leaders to return to dialogue as it is an ode and memoir to the World Political Forum and the dozens of presidents, prime ministers and intellectual leaders who took part in the illuminating debates in Turin, Allessandria and Piedmonte with the Forum which had the blessing of Pope John Paul II for its work. —Article published by Other News, Rome 18 October 2024.

In this article, Jan Mortier puts the case for a New Industrial Revolution for Europe to create a new paradigm of partnership and prosperity for all by deploying Public Private Partnerships for Investment in infrastructure for the European civilization. Based on his experience as the only British speaker at the First India-Japan Global Partnership Summit in Tokyo, where he witnessed first hand the pilot working model of strategic economic investment between Japan and India at the Prime Ministerial and CEO levels. Jan calls for this bilateral prosperity model to be replicated in Europe by bringing together the corporations, governments and financiers to invest in European mega-projects which will have knock on effects to catalyze an industrial revolution in Europe and promote prosperity and peace in the European neighborhood. An earlier version of this paper was first presented to the New Policy Forum, France in 2014. —Article published, Rome, 28 October 2026.
